Weight Loss Tip #8: Visualize the Gym

Jonathan smallJonathan Bennett

I once overheard an older gentleman at the YMCA telling his friend who was slacking on going to the gym that he had never left the gym feeling worse than when he entered and in fact most times felt better. I thought about it and totally agree. With the exception of the odd days where I may have slightly injured myself or was sick, I always left the YMCA feeling better. I always had more energy (in spite of sometimes hour long workouts), better mental clarity, and greater self esteem.

If only I had the energy and mental clarity to get motivated to go to the gym! Remind yourself how good you will feel when you are done, not only the temporary sense of well-being, but also the great feeling you have being fit and thin.

Here a few of my personal ways to get yourself to a gym

Just go- Kind of like monopoly really, don't stop anywhere, just get there. Even if you have a million excuses, just get in your car, get in the gym, and get changed. You'll feel pretty silly if you back out at that point. Sometimes just being there is a good motivator.

Recognize your distractions- I always go to the gym after work. If I go home, get on the couch or the computer and start my evening business, I am stuck. The motivation is gone. After work, I may be a little tired, but in the car I'm in the gym zone.

Get a little help- Have a cup of coffee or tea beforehand if you're low on energy. Most of us are busy people and the gym is a lot of effort. Sometimes we need a little boost. Aviod a lot of caffeine, though, as it can be counterproductive.

Keep a symbol of your goal- Keep a "fat picture" around or something along those lines with you at all times. Then, when you're ready to make excuses remind yourself how much you prefer being thin and fit.

So, visualize the gym and make it happen.
