Too Much of a Good Thing?

I am a big fan of stevia, the natural sweetener. I’ve always defended the taste and since it comes from a plant it also has some natural advantages over the artificial sweeteners. Yet, being natural doesn’t necessarily make it perfect. When my employer ran out of Splenda for a couple of days, I started using stevia at work (normally I use stevia at home and Splenda at work). Since I’m a pretty heavy coffee drinker, I started consuming a lot more stevia. I developed a strong metallic taste in my mouth that only went away in the morning. Since I consume a lot of supplements I started removing supplements from my diet to see the source. Sure enough it was from stevia. Does anyone else have this problem? With the upcoming marketing of stevia based drinks and the bad news on Splenda, this metallic taste is a pretty big bummer for me. Any suggestions?

I was wondering what kind of Stevia you were using. There are many different manufacturers and they are not all the same. The extraction process varies as does the final product sold in packets and shakers. Many companies choose to use chemicals and/or alcohol in their processing. The brand that doesn’t use those chemicals or alcohols is SweetLeaf. That is the brand of my choice and really the only one I would recommend. I’m sorry you had the reaction that you did but don’t spread bad news about Stevia. It’s an incredible product. God gave us a plant and SweetLeaf knows how to use it. Blessings from a believer in SweetLeaf.

      Sweet Lucee,
I love Stevia and am definitely not trying to spread bad news. On several occasions I have recommdended stevia on this blog and will continue to do so. However, it’s important that people also know the differences in products, etc. I have several people looking into the question I asked and will post about it. I will include your comment too. I want to educate people about stevia so that more people will use it and appreciate it.

I found your note this morning when looking for information on whether Stevia leaves a metallic taste in your mouth. I have just started in the last month to remove sugar from my diet and have been using Truvia and have noticed a metallic taste in my mouth. I do not have any oral hygiene problems so I ruled that out. The book I am using for my dietary change also uses Xylitol but I have not tried it yet. I am going to start drinking more water today and see how that effects the metallic taste.

Any information you can share with me on your experience would be greatly appreciated.
